Women are legally allowed to give birth in whichever way they want. But when it comes to who can attend the birth, the law gets tricky. Doctors and nurses are licensed to help with labor but midwives don't always have that option. It depends on the state and whether or not the government licenses and regulates midwives. This can have consequences for the midwives legal status, for the mother's birth experience and for the baby's wellbeing.
